Every friday, a new movie, few we want to miss and few we don’t. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK) was one of the movies which I was eagerly waiting for. But sadly it was not worth waiting for the movie. This was first Karan Johar movie in which half of the theatre started leaving before the movie ends; people just started leaving!!! (How can you expect people to wait for 3.15 hours just to see the crappy end?)
The people had lot of expectations from the movie and infact the movie could have been a good movie but few things just did not work well and in the end, everything got screwed up.
Let me start with the brief idea about the story.
The story is about Maya (Rani Mukherjee), wife of Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan) and Dev (Shahrukh Khan), husband of Riya (Priety Zinta) who are happy with their married lives but not from inside, they end up keeping their partners unhappy about one or other thing. I know, I know, that is a really bad way to narrate a good story but that’s how I am, in short bad in it. Okay back to story….in between these things, Dev and Maya gets to know each other and becomes friends, who are trying to sort out their own married lives but in between this, they both fell in love with each other. And that’s when the real story starts…
The story of the movie takes you to the next level from the regular hindi cinema, a very much for matured audience but it ends up being like one of the sas bahu dramas.
The first half of the movie picked up very well, some of the scenes in the movie were very good, specially the ones in which Amitabh Bachchan was involved.
The second half is exactly opposite of it, yeah, there are few moments which are very good but the most of the part is kind of bad or in simple language, messed up. The second half is too much stretched and they could have cut many things and made it shorter or less stretched. If I say more about the 2nd half here, people will kill me, specially Ashwin, who will shout at me saying, “why didn’t you put spoiler note”.. haha
Okay, its 5.30 AM, time to sum up the things…
Story: Very good story but Karan did his good job by messing it up totally and making it sas bahu types drama.
Music: Picking it up very well, but it has not left shadow of Kal Ho Na Ho in it, very much inspired actually…
Acting:
Abishek Bachchan – Very impressive role, I really liked his role in the movie.
Rani Mukherjee – Rocked, impressive…actually very fine actress after Madhuri Dixit.
Shahrukh Khan – Very good acting but he needs to do something different from these “rona dhona” stuff.
Priety Zinta – Again a very good actor but she it was Rani Mukharji’s film.
Amitabh Bachchan – A very different role, played very well. A class actor, can’t describe in words.
Kirron Kher – Did her job well though she had nothing much to do but did a good job.
In short, I would give this movie 2 stars out of 5, a very much hyped movie….
Note: I still do not understand why in the world Taran Adarsh loves Karan Johar so much? or it is about money? He gave this piece of…. 4.5 stars…
Brief Encounter + Closer + 5/6 songs = KANK. Simple!
I din’t see KANK (or rather won’t be checking it out as it’s running full for 10 days!) but IMO see the original movies. KANK (even if it’s good) will suck in front of Brief Encounter and Closer.
😆 Deep, I shouldn’t have read your review. I was anyway not too eager for this movie when I came to know that its all about (in)fidelity, etc. And now I am all the more “paranoid” about going for it and sitting thru for more than 3 hours. Unfortunately, I have tickets for today (Sat) last show.
I guess, Karan Johar should have put the “SPOILER” tag at the start of the movie. 😉
I thought you were gonna explain atleast half the story (like you said)…Anyways from what you said, the movie sucks just as I thought.
I explained the whole story, it has nothing much, a very simple story which can be told in 3-4 lines and that’s what I did….
[…] Whoisdeep believes its the second half which ruins the movie – I have heard exactly the opposite. Which means, both suck eh?: The first half of the movie picked up very well, some of the scenes in the movie were very good, specially the ones in which Amitabh Bachchan was involved. […]
ah.. this movie sucks big time..
Like Raja Sen mentioned in his review.. SRK hams supreme.. Beginning of the end of SRK the superstar..
just couldnt sit through those 3 and half hours or so..
The movie should be cut by half to about 1 and a half hours even then it would be difficult to sit through.. so JUST IMAGINE…
the ending was sooo bad.. 3 years.. and SRK, rani never crossed paths? neither did AB and preity? what sort of a ending is that?
And that train scene.. crap.. why do they need to run to the station.. why not just call up?
The worst biggie of the year..
i m eafer to watch this movie.. i just want to see preity zinta…
heard she is looking stunning!!
thanks deep, i was about to watch it here in dubai….very expensive…thanks, my money saved.
Yeah I have to wait till I watch it and then I can comment on it …but personally Taran Adarsh gives fake ratings as usual and it could be clearly understood that its all money game…any way I am a common man and this was my 2 cent.
Don’t know what to write as … it is being promoted extreamly aggresvily and so did the reviews… but i think with such mamoth team… i need to give them a chance though i am not eager… and now after reading the Deep’s writing i will wait for its DVD to come out… (of course to download… 😀 ;))
this is a good movie but the ending was so wrong
worst movie in history – save ur money ppl – srk will b hated by many ppl after dis role and kj doesnt know wat he is chattin about – does he want every1 2 start hevin affairs n ruin der n der children’s lives ????????????
super duper flop movie of da year
I thought this was the best film made by Karan Johar- enjoyed it- the ending could have been a different. Good entertainment for three hours and twelve minutes. A must see for the grandeur. The father son duo was excellent
.Does not reflect Indian culture.Bomaby bindas. All feel free to do acts promiscuously.
KJ has proved to be wit among the lords
THIS IS AN INTERESTING REVIEW OF THE MOVIE: http://www.ibnlive.com/blogs/sureshmathew/207/18808/kabhi-alvida-naa-kehna.html
Finally, I saw the movie. I liked it though at times it seemed like a drag. It wasn’t exceptionally good but thoda spice and masala chahiye.
I’m glad I didn’t go for the movie, I knew that the movie is just another kal ho na ho. Karan Johar needs a life now. He can’t expect the decade old formula to work so well now. I mean for how long can people watch the movies which are so similar in the story, the characters, the music even. And ofcourse the locales. I think Karan should concentrate more on “K”offe with “K”aran, rather than with movies.
Guys & Gals!!!
If ur married and wonna escape from ur wife or husband….then dont waste ur time…Go and watch this movie..Real INFIDILITY..
anyway karan prooved it
LOVE HAS NO BARRIERS…
hoooo!!!
HI I am neda I love shahrukh & kajol very much
and I like you come in my veblog thanks you very much.
If theres a way in which a movie shouldnt be made, thats the way Karan Johar has used.Horrible movie except for a few enjoyable moments(pls note they are really few).As for SRK ,his is the most irritating character of the lot.Dunno how somebodyd fall in love with a grumpy, insensitive guy like him.And AB…i think hes done better roles than this.
Anyone suffering from Insomnia..just head to the nearest theatre showing KANK.
Worst movie i have ever seen. Ending does not match indian culture. After doing such a sinfull act, srk and rani should be punished so that no wife and husband ever think to do it. but in movie, they were happy and showed victory. Rubbish. Karan wanna play people married lives.
Kara Johar does not make good movies but this is surprisingly a very good one.
It holds its interest and given the story is not too melodramatic. The crap in this feedbacks about the ending and the moralising is so typical us eh… grow up you morons… Indians cheat just as much as anyone else and it is this propensity to hide behing fake smokescreens that allows corruption, poverty, ignorance, intolerance and the entire gamut of things that is wrong with the country to flourish.
Unless you acknowledge the truth you will never find it mates
i can’t believe u guys didn’t like the movie i thought it was GREAT!!!
please dont waste ur time n money …i agree with pk totally ..by this movie they r encouraging married ppls.not only married even if they have children just leave them and go with ur love ..rubishhhhh
i dont know why indian people dont like the KANK. its a true type story existing in the foreign cities like new york, and all are reminded that the film is all about the story in newyork rather than in the chandani chowk in delhi. and i am really surprised that the same people loved the married mallika when she romanced with imran hasmiin somewhat film.
the film is a good film in my sense. and i love wathcing it few more times.
I watched this movie a week ago and was really dissapointed. The subject was good but it’s not portrayed well in the movie. First of all the characters of SRK and Rani didn’t have to hate their spouses to like each other. They could have started liking each other for what they are. I didn’t find any reason to hate preity’s and Abhisheik’s charactors as they were portrayed as the perfect spouses. For e.g. Rani didn’t have to wear those hidious outfits to entice her husband, he was always there for her and ready to make her comfortable. She is the one who didn’t want to act like a wife with him for no apparent reason. Does SRK really need tips from Rani to know what to do to please his wife. Just smiling and appreciating would have done wonders rather than trying to act like a chinese massage therapist. These were very cheap and immature scenes in the film. Basically Karan didn’t have to find faults with these two (Preity and Abhisheik) to make SRK and Rani to fall for each other. But that said, I must say that just because you find someone interesting from the opposite sex after marriage doesn’t mean that you’ve found love, and that you need to leave your spouse and children ASAP. These things do happen but we humans need to make the right decisions all the time. The only message I was able to interpret from this movie was ‘cheating is ok and that it can be justified as falling in love or finding your soul mate…’gosh.
I was hoping till the end that at least Preity and SRK would get back together, unfortunately our dear Karan decided to spoil the movie with that horrible ending.
So, I got to see a lot of people disappointed with this movie. So, not happy by watching that people are not taking the things in positive ways.
Not only India but outside India, in Asia and Overseas, the comments are coming in the similar ways. In fact, I was a little scared about writing on the same as even my best friend was very angry on it although she was the greatest fan of SRK movies usually. Anyway, coming to the point, the movie, its feel and character.
The question is that what message this movie is giving to public? Is it to break their traditional relations just for the sake of their some fantasies created by such movies and literatures? Or to cheat the persons, who are very much devoted to you, and might be finding the ways to please you and you are finding the ways to come out of relations? Are they trying to give the bad image of Indian community and the new generations?
My answer is something different as usual. According to me, there was really no direct message for the mass, there was no solution but it was the presentation of situations and a raised question. Is this really far from our life? Is this really a movie for overseas mass and has no touch to our traditions? Why people are so scared that they are refusing that they even have watched the movie or watched only the first part? Why are they scaring others not to dare to watch the movie? A movie with Shahrukh, Abhishek, Priti and Rani; and ofcourse with their best acting performances and you say that the movie is the worst ever. Definitely there is something.
A lot of things I could say on the same. I hope this time Deep will again like my ways of expressing the things so although he might not liking the same but I am leaving a link of my blog here as don’t want to mess up with his blog by my long long review.
http://nitishkumar.wordpress.com/2006/08/31/kabhi-alvida-na-kahna-is-this-not-with-you/
Deep!! I request you please take a look and comment as I really want to know the words from the other side seriously.
I think this movie is one of the mistakes made by Karan Johar.Actually movie does not leave any message in the end nor they try to.It is people who expect some message to be given through the movie. More than the message part, the movie lacked a lot in the 2nd half which made the whole thing a mess. Few things just could not work as they should be. The 2nd half raises many questions which keeps you thinking “why karan did not think logically here?”
But anyways, people learn from their mistakes and I am sure Karan Johar will come with a great movie next time.
Deep
Do you think that giving solutions is the job of a movie makers and story writers, if even we are failing to give one?
Just give me a straight answer … saying Maya and Dev just plainly wrong is going to solve any thing? Even if you and me are trying to be away from questions then what do you think that we will ve able to face the similar things if come to us? I just have given a straight and fine perspective from my side and I was wishing for a matching view from the another side that is there any more creative suggestion for the situations?
But I am still disappointed.
Well giving solutions is not the job of movie maker but his job is to make a good movie as well as earn some good movie. If he makes movies which are totally illogical then the movie is going to be bad at box office.
KANK did well because it was Karan Johar movie with STARS but its collection fell down historically in 2nd and 3rd week.
Now about the characters Maya and Dev are wrong, well they were completely wrong because Dev had his kid behind it.. and leaving family like this is totally wrong…
About running away from question, there is no question of running away or doing anything as it’s just a movie and it is job of director to portay the character and decide what he wants.
There was a very good talk show on NDTV where they had called Karan Johar, Shahrukh Khan and few others, the topic was about this issue only and it was a very healy talk show for around 2-3 hours.
Definately aggreeing you on many points but even then your answers are not in a positive perspective. If we just gave up in such situation then how we are going to find something new.
Nothing is always wrog or right. Opposing something is something else and facing that from our own people is another thing. We need to clean up something we need to make our hands dirty to, we need to put our mind into it that is there any solution?
The first answer starts from understanding the characters from the right perspectives and if I go through your ways and people who are giving similar comments then you people are not even able to get the feel of Maya;s character which is a kind of most complex character of the movie after Amitabh one and definately brilliantly played by Rani for which she is sure deserving for award.
Try to feel and find something positive. just do not write for only writing, live with the things and come with something new to offer, something positive to offer. I am asking you because I know you could write on the same and could give me some more ideas about the same and might that be helpful in finding any new solution.
Nitish, earlier it was Indian Idol and now it is KANK, why do you guys take these things so seriously, I don’t understand that. Anyways this will be my last reply to this useless argument…and I won’t allow these kind of stupid arguments any more…
I am quoting your reply here in parts:
Nothing new? The key is logical and ethical. They should have supressed their feelings at the first place, for god’s sake, they have a kid and they can’t play around like fools saying “you love me, I love you, chalo bhaag chale” life is more than that….
Rani is a great actress but it was Karan who messed up the things…
About getting feel of Maya’s character, lol I will die one day if I try to get feel of every character of every movie on every friday… haha
Just imagine what will be my position if i get “feel” of Krrish haha
and what do you mean by this? lol Try to feel something positive from the crap? Please do not post these kind of comments somewhere else, people will laugh on you, and I am serious about it…
PERIOD
Nitish, earlier it was Indian Idol and now it is KANK, why do you guys take these things so seriously
Really I am much disppointed with this bitterness. It is my way. Whenever I do something, I do very seriously and for your kind information, I am not someone of writing field and I come to write if I think that something is just out of turn.
Indian Idol, I have not even named that and you started with that. I am very sad on this approach. Although need not to mention that even at that time, the things were out of your touch and if your predictions and words were presenting the right mass then sure he was out in very earliar rounds. Anyway, don’t wanna discuss.
That time that was about the mass and this time it is about the class. Why always you come to use the words like ….
Anyways this will be my last reply to this useless argument…and I won’t allow these kind of stupid arguments any more…
If you are not giving any contradicting my view about the character’s feel then why this way? Just answer me, why do you write to just throw your views over the mass without caring anyone’s words. Definately you are the administrator and it is your right that who could write on your site and who not? But just ask your heart, why so ????
Now, coming towards your reply …
They should have supressed their feelings at the first place, for god’s sake, they have a kid and they can’t play around like fools saying “you love me, I love you, chalo bhaag chale life is more than that….
A kid, whose mother is enough to care him off and even shown him that he have not done anything rather than scaring the poor and she is the boss of the family. He was knowing that he is unsuccessful and while in the first half when he was trying to make his boy like him, in second half, he got to know that living his life come to give him only pain. It was just better to let him live a very own and practical life like his mother. Was that justified to live with her with continuous depression? Was that justified for the child that he is not getting her mother in his football matches and not even she is able to remember that he want to learn Gitar or Vialin? At least after Shahrukh, she was at least caring him. What was better?
chalo bhaag chale, it was not their decisions. They came back to their family and even both of them were knowing that what will happen, they strengthen themselves and come to say each and everything to their partners. Moreover, there were three complete years in between. They even didn’t try to know about each other. Otherwise sure were going to know about the happening. Three complete years …. for you those were only 2 minitues of the movie, but according to the story, there were three cpmplete years meanwhile they were completely cut off by their families and not even tried to talk to each other too. Could you feel that mean? No one wants to be bad, no one wants to feel himself/herself down. There was nothing like chalo bhag chale …
Being judgemental is always easy but living the judgements before giving them is something make you succeed for relations. But anyway it just my idea and not expected to be yours.
About getting feel of Maya’s character, lol I will die one day if I try to get feel of every character of every movie on every friday… haha …
Definately, you are right but even while typing these words you know that you are not justified in these words and you know that you are not laughing too.
Writing is not only profession, it is a passion. And even if you come to write regularly on various issues, you need to have a balanced mixture of profession and passion.
I am here to know about other’s side. Not because I want to be famous. Last time, many people thought that there was any personal reason behind my series of comments, then why I was away from writing after that? I write only if I feel, otherwise I prefer to leave that for Professionals … I am a computer engineer, who writes, draw, act only when he feel something, otherwise … I am quiet …
Try to feel something positive from the crap? Please do not post these kind of comments somewhere else, people will laugh on you, and I am serious about it…
Saying others word crap and trying to make only your ideas justified… good going. You really know that making me angry is not possible for you and you only have option to delete my comments as you …..
Sympathy towards me??? Don’t worry …. My articles, poetries are always a success in print media and as about my profession of computers then I am known for that only against my clients. Brother!!!! do you really think that I need a sympathy???? Last time … anyway leave that
I know the reaction but even then …. definately I can’t write like you regularly but I know the things better than you, if you keep on getting angry in this irritating way…
Okay, period taken back but this will be 101% my last comment on this discussion (i.e. between you and me)
The bitterness is because you yourself do not know what you are writing…you are just writing long replies just for the sake of writing, the same thing has happened in Indian Idol thread and that is why I had to remind you about it.
Going back to Indian Idol for a min, Karunya lost the same but I think he is doing more shows and work then Sandeep, take his song in Lage Raho…his tour in US etc..
Anyways, back to KANK…
I did not call your words crap but I meant the movie is crap and there is no point in thinking positive in that.
As mentioned earlier, you have taken the movie too seriously and that is why you are trying best to save your favorite characters in the movie. The life is much more than that, you are assuming that character of Dev is not earning and character of Riya is taking care of the child so he can leave but it is not easy, the child needs a father no matter if he earns or not.
What Karan Johar tried to explain the simple love story of 2 poeple who run away from their house to be together but the ony difference is here is, they are married and one has kid. Everything in the movie is as expcted, even the end of the movie. I could see poeple leaving the theatre hall even before the movie ended.
The movie would have been a huge hit if they would have handled the story well.
About finiding solutions, as I said earlier, it is not our job to find the solution for the characters of the movie, because it is just a movie, you have to watch it, have fun and forget it…they do not expect you to learn something from it (that is what even Karan and Shahrukh had said in the NDTV debate)
I am telling you again, do not get your self come out of the movie, leave it as just a movie. You have better things to code than giving so much importance to these kind of topics.
You might be knowing things better than me that is highly possible but it is just that, you cannot express well in the form of words and you end up writing long posts which does not make much of sense in the end.
Anyways good luck with your career and blog.
Regards,
Deep
Again the same. Really you are the best person to hold and write a blog. You are really having a lot of new things to give to the world and really know everything better than their owner.
Really know that what Karan thought. Hoping to see you guiding people after some months.
Really I bore a lot but I really like to irritate you as ……. I am really really smiling and literally laughing. Poor guy.
Writing means passion and my way is to do the thing at their best. I write Poem, I do Sketch, I do Acting, I am a proven Photographer (and some of snaps has been praised publically) even then I am the best hope at my work table.
My dear!! it is always important that you make yourself involved in whatever you do. Go and check my blog, I am writing after one month. I do not write often and do not make myself associated with something. Have you heard myself talking about Indian Idol once it ended? I do make sense while writing and don’t choose common things as you might be choosing as you need to comment on everything even if it touched to you or not.
My dear!! if I make my writing in that manner then I snap at least 1000 snaps in one month and at least 300 are always remarkable and might be with a lot of things behind that but I do care of my work,so not having that much time.
Thanks for your Good Luck as I will find a good friend in your face one day even if you are strictly trying to be away from me.
At the end I am not trying to save any character. I just made a justification to each adn everyone’s inner feel because no one wants to be wrong from inside.
I tried to present A more clear picture and on the basis of that just trying to figure out that kind of ways as I have seen the complexity of human nature and relations and really want to learn a lot of things from each and everything like that.
The movie is just outstanding in that way. not giving a message but making you think. It is the only which affected me after Rang De Basanti but as that time most of the people were taking that movie in right perspectives, so I was not needed to speak but this time I thought I should,
Nitish, you are such an irritating charactor with no clue about life or entertainment.
Deep, you’re understod by many who read this and we think you have the patience of a priest to tolerate Nitish.
Nitish pls….get a life….
May be… Just may be…Karan made this movie for people like you and not for the intelligent ones like Deep…
There is water in the glass…
How one perceives this thing…
1. Some will say glass is half full…
2. Some will say there is enough space for water in glass…
3. Some will glass is half empty…
4. And some will say that there is some water in glass…
So, after watching some thing, one has his/her own perception. It is possible for two persons to have same or different view about what they saw but no one… I mean… no one has right to say that you are irritating or wrong or have no idea of how life is or some thing like that. We are here to share what we think… and might say that it is right in my opinion but on hearing some one and to say that you are wrong or irritating is very disappointing. Be open to what others say and try to get of feel of that too and ones you have that, decision is yours.
And no hard feelings jiggers… why don’t you people understand that its just a movie… if you think it is right/ wrong so be it. Don’t force others to agree with you.
Well, I sincerely apologize as I feel I’ve been too harsh in my earlier post.
I never felt it was too harsh at the time I posted as I was quite irritated. However didn’t mean to upset anyone…
Sensible
Hoping that people might try to think more positively and closely. I want to give you all one exmaple.
Sometime ago there was a film named Titanic was creating sensation in Indian Viewers and then I got a comment on that movie in some review:
’ A scene which created sensations in our Indian audiences, every one discussed how much of Kate Winslet’s body did they get to see. But alas it’s not about Kate, it’s about Rose. And her belief in this man she met only 2 days back, her passion to make him draw her, her first expression of love for him, and his respect for her as a woman beyond her body. The Heart Of The Ocean, a very expensive heart shaped pendent of blue stone, that Cal gifted Rose, but she leaves it in his safe before going away with Jack, along with her nude sketch wearing ‘only’ it, as a symbol of all that Cal wanted out of her… the wealth and her body.
Just think, why someone come to write and what responsibility a blogger has, when come to comment on something, otherwise it is really will be easy to ban all bloggers as Indian government wished to do so.
P.S. : I am commenting on Vicky not on Deep. By the way thanks for making me spam, May God help you. I should run a complete attack on each of your blog with my whole friend circle.
Sorry for the foolish gramtical mistakes.
